Supporting Parents Through School Transitions

Support in Every Season

Heading back to school is a milestone filled with mixed emotions for children and parents alike.  Oftentimes, parents may be focused on the weight of this transition for their children. However, it is important to recognize that this transition can impact parents as well.

Here at the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery, we know that the well-being of parents matters! If you’re feeling the weight of this transition, you’re not alone. Below are some simple ways to care for yourself during this season, even as you are helping your children manage the stress and excitement of this time:

  • Give yourself grace.

Transitions can feel overwhelming. Acknowledge your emotions. Whether you’re feeling pride, sadness, relief, or all of the above, remember that all of these are okay and there is no “right” way to feel.

  • Maintain healthy routines.

Just as children benefit from consistency, so do parents! Regular meals and snacks, sleep, and movement each day can be helpful in managing stress.

  • Carve out quiet moments.

Taking a few minutes to breathe deeply, journal, or practice mindfulness can be helpful in giving the space to reset and experience a clear mind.

  • Stay connected.

Maintain relationships with friends, family, and other parents. Shared experiences can relieve the emotional load felt during this season.

  • Celebrate!

Even in the chaos of the back to school season, look for joy in the milestones of a new school year. Maybe it’s doing a favorite activity with your child or sharing a meal with them to celebrate their journey back to school. Or, maybe it’s simply cheering them on as they get on the bus for their first day.

  • Ask for help when needed.

If you find yourself overwhelmed by the stress of this season, and struggling to find the time and space needed to manage your mental health, it may be time to reach out for help. There’s nothing wrong with reaching out for extra support.

Many St. Louis families are adjusting to new school environments, whether that be from the May tornadoes, or decisions made by individual families for the needs of their children. If the transition back to school feels especially difficult this year, you’re not alone. The Crisis Nursery is always here to listen and provide resources and support! Our 24-Hour Helpline is available any time of the day or night: 314-786-3201.
